March 13-23, 2013

Happy St.Patty's Day, We "bagged" another back country Cabin. Our goal is to get to all Forest Service, Park Service and Wildlife Refuge Cabins. When everything freezes up in the winter that's when you can really start to explore and get to places your normal can not access.

Wing and feet prints left in the snow of a Raven hoping and flapping on take off.
Log Book Entry
It didn't feel like anything was following us, but the wold tracks over our ski tracks showed us we were not alone.
Sunny, skate ski, with Sandhill Sean in Stupendous Seward Surrounded by spruces, Siskins and Siberian Species!
While out conducting a COASST Survey on Tonsina beach we found this HUGE smooth Lumpsucker. Weird fish species.
New haircut, we'll see how I like the new bangs over time...

March 5-12, 2013

This week started off to a great start, I was invited to Go to Homer and help Alaska Department Of Fish and Game with their SeaDuck surveys in Kachemak Bay; I was helping out for 4 days.
This is were we were based out of for our surveys.
Counting birds in Neptune Bay, lucked out with one bluebird day.
Black Scoters flying in front of Grenwick Glacier
Data Sheets drying out from a cold, wet soggy day
Longtail ducks flying all around the boat, pretty great day!
Upon my return to work there was a little Common Redpoll in Rehab, it was ready for release, so we took him home and released him near my feeders in my yard. He Mixed right in with the other 50 or so birds, that have been draining my feeders each day.
10 inches of snow fell while we were out work. Charlie called in a "sick ski day".
Went for a beach walk and found this frozen Jellyfish on the beach. Kinda looks like an eye?
An Eider feather floats in the icy pool as fresh snow falls.

Feb. 27-March 4

The week started out great with an unexpected package from my friend Tina who just got back from Africa. As you can see by the box contents she knows me well.
After work skijour with a friends dog that we are watching. We soft mush snow made for bad ski conditions, but we still tried.
Training the seals in "snow globe" conditions, "Tongass" was giving me his flipper.

Seabird survey out in the bay got exciting when we spotted a pod of Orcas. We took a lot of photos of their left sides of their dorsal fins to ID them.

This is two boats in one. The Bottom one is a type of submergible barge from China that sinks half way so the oil rig plat form can be pulled up onto the barg for transport. it has been in Res. Bay for a few months now for repairs. All loaded up this eye sore should be leaving any day now.
Charlie on the last 200 yards of the 50K Tour of Anchorage skate ski race. He did awesome finished in 2hours 58 min. I was there with friends and cow bell to cheer him on. Soon I will post a video we are making of the race.
